Tigard Police, Beaverton Police and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office would like to share information with the community regarding a string of home burglaries and attempted burglaries that may be connected.

Across our three jurisdictions, investigators are following up on 10 recent cases that appear similar in nature, including four in Tigard, four in Washington County and two in Beaverton that have happened since late September. So far, the victims are all affluent homeowners who are Asian Americans, and the suspect(s) use a similar method to break in. 

We want to assure our communities that investigators are working in a coordinated effort to share information and develop leads. They are conducting extensive interviews with victims as well as neighbors and are canvassing neighborhoods to gather evidence. Investigators are actively looking into whether additional links between the victims exists.

We are sharing information with law enforcement agencies throughout the state and working with partners at the federal level, to maximize coordination and leverage resources between jurisdictions as the investigation moves forward.

Investigators believe the suspect(s) will park in a car to conduct surveillance on a home that is being targeted to determine when the homeowner will be away. We are asking community members to be aware of their surroundings, including any activity that appears out of place in your neighborhood or appears to be suspicious. Guns recovered from the safe after search warrant

Several stolen guns were recovered from a man who is a convicted felon, after officers responded to a domestic violence disturbance.

On November 12, 2024, at 1:35AM Tigard patrol officers responded to a disturbance with a weapon in the 7000 block of SW Taylors Ferry Road. Responding officers learned a man pointed a gun at a woman and threatened to shoot her, hit her in the face and chased her with a hatchet before officers arrived and she safely made it outside.

Officers identified the suspect as Jason Alan Smith, age 43, and learned he is a convicted felon who is not legally allowed to have guns. A large gun safe was found at home, and a judge authorized a search warrant for officers to open the safe. Inside, they found 16 guns, including handguns, rifles and shotguns, including one that appeared to be a sawed-off shotgun.

Many of the guns did not have serial numbers. However, officers have confirmed at least 5 of the guns were stolen in a Clackamas County burglary earlier this year. Another 2 guns are believed to be tied to that case but have not yet been confirmed.

Smith was taken to the Washington County Jail on charges including second-degree kidnapping, fourth-degree assault, felon in possession of a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon, menacing and coercion. It’s likely that additional charges will be filed related to the guns recovered in the safe.

Officers at the scene Thursday

A man has safely been taken into custody after a standoff at a Tigard apartment complex.

On Thursday, October 31^st, 2024, about 3:30PM Tigard Police officers responded to the Syngii Apartments on SW Hawks Beard Street. Officers learned a man tried to break into an apartment unit, was outside yelling, had access to weapons and was making threats of harm.

Officers surrounded the apartment complex and worked to communicate with the man in question, who remained uncooperative with officers. Washington County’s Tactical Negotiations Team and Crisis Negotiations Unit responded to the scene to assist officers. Due to the man’s access to weapons and lack of cooperation with officers, residents of the complex were initially asked to stay in their apartment units (shelter in place). About 6:45PM, residents were evacuated to a community room at the apartment complex as a precaution while officers worked to resolve the situation.

The man was identified as Daniel Bean, a 38-year-old resident of the complex. Around 8:30PM he was safely taken into custody on charges including first-degree attempted burglary, unlawful use of a weapon, menacing and disorderly conduct. He was checked out at the hospital, then was booked into the Washington County Jail. Residents were allowed back to their apartment units about 9:30PM. 

We’d like to thank the residents of the complex for their patience during this situation, as well as Westgate Baptist Church for allowing officers to use their facility to get out of the rain and our partners with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Hillsboro and Beaverton Police for their assistance, and the King City Police Department for covering Tigard police calls while officers responded to this situation.

Several Tigard Police officers are thankfully safe, after they were nearly hit by the driver of a stolen car who rammed police cars on Thursday. The suspect was safely taken into custody in a Tigard neighborhood Monday afternoon on 20 criminal charges.

On Thursday, October 24, 2024, officers responded to the Tigard Walmart parking lot (7800 SW Dartmouth Street) just after 10am. A man reported his car had been stolen in a burglary in Portland earlier that morning, and he’d tracked it to the Walmart store parking lot. As plain-clothed detectives responded to the scene, a man and woman came out of the store and got back in the stolen car. 

Police officers in marked patrol cars boxed in the stolen car to try and prevent the driver from leaving. However, the driver rammed several police cars and other parked cars, then threw the stolen car in reverse and went up over a curb and fire hydrant to get away, nearly hitting at least two officers in the process. The suspect then led officers on a pursuit headed toward Portland on I-5. Tigard Police supervisors discontinued the pursuit a few minutes later for safety reasons. 

In all, four police cars and two other parked cars were damaged. Thankfully, nobody was hurt. The stolen car was recovered by Portland Police the next day, October 25, 2024, and the suspect was identified as Richard Wilson, age 47, from Portland.

On Monday, October 28, 2024, Tigard Police located Wilson near an apartment complex on SW Hunziker Road. He ran through a wooded area, and a K-9 team from Hillsboro Police tracked him to a collapsed pop-up trailer in the backyard of a home on SW Cherry Drive.

For over an hour, officers worked to communicate with Wilson and get him to come out. The Washington County Tactical Negotiation Team (TNT) and Crisis Negotiations Unit (CNU) responded to assist at the scene, along with drone teams from Tigard and Sherwood Police. Wilson ultimately came out and was safely arrested.

Wilson was taken to the Washington County Jail on the following 20 charges:

• Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle
• Recklessly Endangering x6
• Attempting to Elude a Police Officer
• Criminal Driving – Suspended/Revoked
• Possession of a Stolen Vehicle
• Hit and run – Vehicle/Property (x4)
• Criminal Mischief II x4
• Reckless Driving
• Parole Violation
