May 1, 2024, Colorado Springs, CO - It has been said you were born with the ability to change someone’s life.  Don’t ever waste it.  At Special Kids Special Families (SKSF) we take that phrase to heart.  We are committed to making the Pikes Peak region the best in the nation for supporting foster children and assisting you and your loved one’s unique mental health journey towards wellness and recovery.   

In May, we embark on a journey of recognition, weaving together threads of resilience and compassion. National Foster Care Awareness Month beckons us to honor the strength of children and youth navigating the labyrinth of foster care. It's a time to pay homage to the unsung heroes—the foster parents, social workers, and advocates—who stand as beacons of hope in the lives of these vulnerable souls. As we illuminate the challenges faced by children in foster care, we kindle a flame of awareness, igniting hearts with the realization of the profound need for stable and nurturing homes. This month calls upon us to unite in solidarity, to be the architects of change, building bridges of support and fostering opportunities for every child to blossom into their fullest potential.

President Biden renewed a proclamation in declaring May National Foster Care Month.  In it he stated: “I call upon all Americans to observe this month by reaching out in their neighborhoods and communities to the children and youth in foster care and their families, to those at risk of entering foster care, and to kin families and other caregivers.” 

Simultaneously, May embraces Mental Health Awareness Month, casting a gentle glow on the intricate tapestry of our inner landscapes. It's a season for candid conversations, for dismantling the barriers of stigma that shroud mental health in shadows. Within these thirty-one days, we champion the cause of emotional well-being, advocating for the recognition of mental health as an inseparable facet of our holistic selves. Together, we affirm the fundamental truth that seeking support is not a sign of weakness but a courageous step towards healing and growth. May beckons us to cradle each other in compassion, to lend an empathetic ear, and to stand as pillars of strength for those navigating the labyrinth of their own minds. In this month of dual recognition, let us embrace the power of empathy, forging pathways towards a world where every child feels cherished, and every individual's mental health is nurtured with tender care.

About Special Kids Special Families (SKSF): a non-profit umbrella organization with several unique programs designed to support people with disabilities of all ages from early childhood through senior adult as well as their families and caregivers. SKSF offers programs for individuals with disabilities including: 

• Child and Family Services that encompasses Zach’s Place child & respite care center, and Foster and Adoption Care services; 
• Adult and Senior Services offering day programs and Host Home opportunities for adults and seniors with disabilities; 
• Support and Empowerment Services offering a range of assistance including: transportation, home care, Veterans Services, counseling and specialized therapy to individuals ages 4 to adulthood.
